Alchemy 2013 Syrah

We’re normally all just about Chardonnay, but are getting asked more and more frequently by our customers to produce an Alchemy red! So, we’ve relented – and have “dipped our toe in the water” with a first (small) batch of Syrah from the acclaimed 2013 vintage.

Quality Syrah fruit was sourced from premium producers on the inland gravels areas around Hastings. Big berry clusters, typical of the variety, were detangled and the fruit was thinned out. 2013 was a very dry vintage, with hot days and cool nights – which were ideal conditions for ripening Syrah.

Handpicked grapes were destemmed to open top fermenters. The grapes were then cold soaked for a week – to extract maximum colour and tannin from the skins – before undergoing a quick fermentation with natural vineyard yeasts.

After fermentation, the young wine was pressed to tank before draining to French oak barrels (20% of which were new). All of the barrels went through a secondary (malolactic) fermentation and the wine was left to age on full lees. After 18 months aging, the wine in the barrels was then blended and lightly fined, before bottling.

Deep red in colour, with a purple hue.

A complex, savoury nose with fruit characters of blueberry and plum. Notes of wet earth and floral spice give additional interest to the aromatic profile.

The palate is rich and rounded, with a toasty and meaty complexity. The spice notes come from both the ripe fruit and the newer French oak barrels. The silky texture on the palate is from the grape skin tannins. These tannins help to balance the richness of the fruit and give the wine structure, without contributing hardness.

Enjoy this wine now or up to eight years of age – partner with grilled or braised red meat dishes.

Alchemy Hawke’s Bay 2013 Syrah

“Elegant, pure and persistent, this is an immensely charming syrah filled with dark plum, blueberry and floral notes with a touch of white pepper. The palate is succulent and rounded with excellent focus and fine texture, leading to a lingering silky finish. Beautifully poised and delightfully attractive. At its best: now to 2020”.
