Alchemy 2015 Chardonnay

From what turned out to be another great vintage, our 2015 Chardonnay was created from hand-picked ENTAV-548, Clone 15 and Clone 95 fruit off our premium Omarunui and Dartmoor Road vineyards.

Our Chardonnay fruit was top-quality again this year, with a beautiful acidity and sugar balance. Crop levels were moderate, and the fruit intensity was similarly high as in our previous 2 excellent vintages.

Parcels of fruit were hand-picked and brought into the winery as they became both flavour and phenologically ripe. Whole bunches were loaded into the press and the juice gently extracted over three hours. The juice was briefly settled in tank for 12 hours, before then being run to barrel for fermentation.

All barrels were French oak – of which around 30% were new. Both alcohol and malic fermentations were completed over a period of six months, followed by further integration and maturation in barrel for five months.

The barrels were blended to tank and the wine was bottled in March 2016.

Pale straw in colour, with a hint of green.

Pure Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay fruit aromas of peaches and underlying citrus. Suggestions of vanilla and brioche add nuance from both the barrel and extended lees aging.

The palate is restrained as a young wine showing both freshness and weight, but with the promise of more fatness and generosity with time. Structurally this wine in built on fruit – with both the weight of ripe stone fruit and the fresh acidity of citrus providing a natural balance.

Texturally the wine shows an underlying thread of both fruit and oak phenolic. The overall impression is of fineness and beauty.

Enjoy this wine now or up to five years of age – partner with a wide range of poultry and seafood dishes.

Alchemy Hawke’s Bay 2015 Chardonnay

“Grapes were hand picked and whole bunch pressed, then fermented and matured in French oak barrels. The inviting bouquet shows ripe stone fruit, rockmelon and citrus characters with nuances of vanilla and cedar. The palate delivers excellent fruit weight and rounded mouthfeel, wonderfully enhanced by stylish oak infusion and creamy texture. The wine is generous and flavoursome, with plenty of ripe fruit flavours backed by elegant complexity. At its best: now to 2019.”
